Compassionate counseling and EMDR support after a difficult childbirth | Palos Heights, Chicago & Illinois telehealth

A difficult or frightening birth can leave lasting emotional effects—even when you and your baby are physically healthy. You can love your baby and still feel traumatized by your birth experience. Victress, A Wellness Center for Women, offers trauma-informed counseling to help women process difficult childbirth experiences and postpartum distress.

What is birth trauma?

Birth trauma is emotional distress following a frightening, overwhelming, or disempowering pregnancy, delivery, or postpartum experience. It may follow an emergency C-section, unexpected complications, a NICU stay, separation from your baby, or feeling unheard during medical care. Your experience matters even if others believe everything turned out fine.

Signs of birth trauma

Symptoms can include intrusive memories or nightmares, anxiety about your baby’s safety, avoidance of birth reminders or appointments, guilt or self-blame, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, sleep difficulties, and fear of future childbirth. Some women develop childbirth-related PTSD; others experience significant distress without meeting PTSD criteria. Postpartum anxiety and depression can also occur alongside birth trauma.

How counseling and EMDR may help

Therapy can provide space to process frightening memories, address guilt and anxiety, develop coping strategies, and rebuild emotional confidence. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based treatment for PTSD and may be appropriate for some childbirth-related trauma. A qualified clinician will assess your needs and discuss suitable options; EMDR is not necessary for everyone.

Birth trauma after a NICU experience

A NICU admission can bring fear, uncertainty, helplessness, and grief. Anxiety may continue after discharge, particularly around feeding, medical visits, or developmental concerns. Counseling can support emotional recovery from these experiences.
