How to Verify Your Illinois Medicaid Benefits Before Starting Therapy

Before you schedule: five steps to check your benefits

Finding a therapist is easier when you know what your health plan covers. If you have Illinois Medicaid, these steps can help you confirm your coverage, find an in-network therapist, and avoid surprises before your first appointment.

1. Check whether your Medicaid coverage is active

Look at your current insurance card and any recent letters from Illinois Medicaid. If you are unsure whether your coverage is active, check your case information through Illinois ABE / Manage My Case or contact the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS). Your eligibility and plan enrollment can change, so verify them close to your appointment.

2. Identify your managed-care plan

Many Illinois Medicaid members receive benefits through a managed-care organization. Find the exact plan name on your card—for example, Blue Cross Community Health Plans (BCCHP), Meridian Health Plan of Illinois, or Aetna Better Health of Illinois. Do not assume that a therapist who accepts one Medicaid plan accepts every plan.

3. Call the plan and ask about outpatient therapy

Use the member services number on the back of your card. Ask whether outpatient individual psychotherapy is covered, whether telehealth sessions are included, and whether a referral or prior authorization is required for your situation. Ask about any limits or special requirements that apply to your benefits.

4. Verify the individual clinician is in network

A counseling practice may accept your insurance plan while some clinicians are not individually participating or available under it. Ask your plan to confirm the specific therapist and practice location, and ask the practice to check your information as well. Network listings and eligibility can change.

5. Confirm the appointment details

Before the first session, confirm whether the visit is in person or virtual, whether your clinician is accepting new clients, and whether the plan has authorized the services if authorization is needed. Keep a record of the date, representative, and reference number from your call.

Questions you can ask your Medicaid plan

  • Is my coverage active on the date of my appointment?
  • Is outpatient mental health counseling covered under my plan?
  • Is this specific Victress clinician in network for my plan?
  • Are telehealth counseling sessions covered when clinically appropriate?
  • Do I need a referral, prior authorization, or other approval?
